Delving into historical instances and recent trends, including the Cold War era,
the Rwanda genocide, and contemporary geopolitical conflicts, the article eluci-
dates the pervasive nature of disinformation and its enduring impact on global
affairs. It highlights the urgency of addressing this phenomenon in light of its
implications for democratic governance, social stability, and international rela-
tions.
Disinformation context in Malaysia
Disinformation has been a significant factor in Malaysia, contributing to height-
ened ethnic tensions, influencing political discourse, and shaping public opinion,
thereby impacting people’s security. To provide context, the presenter offers a
succinct portrayal of Malaysia’s cultural landscape, aiming to elucidate the na-
tion’s diverse backgrounds and draw potential parallels with other regions like
Sri Lanka. Malaysia, situated in Southeast Asia, boasts a rich cultural tapestry re-
sulting from the fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous customs. This
cultural diversity is further exemplified by the presence of major ethnic groups,
including Malays, Chinese, and Indians, each with its own religious affiliations
and cultural traditions. Despite Islam serving as the official religion, Malaysia
upholds freedom of religion, fostering a religious landscape that encompasses
Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, and more. Such cultural diversity
permeates various facets of life, from cultural practices and festivals to culinary
delights and lifestyle choices, fostering a sense of shared experience among its
populace.
Impact of disinformation in Malaysia
Disinformation, deeply entwined with issues of race and religion, has left an in-
delible mark on Malaysian society, permeating various facets of its socio-politi-
cal landscape.
Historical Context
1. The 13th of May 1969 Racial Riots
The tumultuous events of May 13, 1969, stand as a stark testament to the perni-
cious influence wielded by disinformation on Malaysia’s geopolitical equilibri-
um. A confluence of political animosity and economic disparities among eth-
nic groups served as a combustible backdrop, exacerbated by the proliferation
of disinformation. False narratives and incendiary misinformation, propagated
through various channels, ignited ethnic tensions, precipitating widespread vio-
lence and loss of life. The aftermath of these riots reverberated across Malaysian
society, leaving scars that endure to this day. The tragedy of May 13, 1969, serves
as a sobering reminder of disinformation’s potency in fracturing social cohesion
and perpetuating enduring divisions.
