KDU SHUTTLERS EXCEL AT ICBT SMASHDOWN 2024

The Badminton championship organized by the International College for Business Technology (ICBT) was held at the Mercantile Badminton Association Courts in Colombo on the10^th and 11^th of December. The tournament was held under the male and female category with 17 teams competing in the tournament representing state, non-state universities, and private educational institutes. The event was organized as a team competition, with each match consisting of two singles and three doubles games.

The KDU women’s team came up with an excellent performance during the tournament to be crowned as champions whilst the men’s team secured 3^rd place. During their journey to glory the women’s team played four matches in the group stages and finished 3^rd winning two matches against APIIT (3-2) and UCL (3-0) and going down to ICBT (3-2) and NSBM (3-1). The team came up with a magnificent performance during the semifinals to avenge their defeat at the hands of NSBM in the group stage to win the match 3-1. Keeping the same spirit, the girls showcased their prowess to overcome the strong ICBT girls team (3-2) in the finals to emerge champions of the tournament.  

The KDU men’s team ended the group stage second by defeating NIBM (3-0), ICL (3-0), and Ocean University (3-0). The team had a tough defeat against SLIIT (0-3). The team had hard luck in the semi-finals as they went down fighting to ICBT (0-3). The KDU shuttlers got back to their winning momentum once again during the playoff for 3^rd place, where they overcame heavy resistance from UCL and won the match (3-1) and emerged as 2^nd runners-up in the tournament.
