    Major Surath Fernando is from the Mechanized Infantry Regiment. He received his primary and secondary education from St Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa . He joined the Sri Lanka Army on 7 July 2009 under Intake 72 to the Sri Lanka Military Academy Diyatalawa (SLMA). After completion of the basic military training at SLMA, he was commissioned to the rank of Second Lieutenant on 27 July 2012 and posted to the Mechanized Infantry Regiment and subsequently posted to 4th Mechanized Infantry.

    During his tour of duty, he has held the following appointments:

    Command Appointments

    • Platoon Commander   – 3rd Mechanized Infantry Regiment.
    • Company Commander – 4th Mechanized Infantry Regiment.

    Staff Appointments

    • Intelligence Officer – 3rd Mechanized Infantry Regiment
    • Adjutant –   3rd Mechanized Infantry Regiment.
    • Officer Commander Tactics Wing – Mechanized Infantry Training Centre.

    Instructor Appointments

    • Officer Instructor – Mechanized Infantry Training Centre.
    • Troop Commander – Kotelawala Defence University.
