BADMINTON

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and Imperial College Shared the Major Honours In KDU Leaders Trophy Badminton Tournament 2018.
Leaders’ Trophy Badminton Championship – 2018 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was held on15th, 16th and Sept 17th September 2018 at University Indoor Stadium. KDU team won the men’s Championship and Imperial College won the Ladies Trophy. Lt Col MADR Mangala RSP, the Deputy Dean of Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies graced the occasion as Chief Guests of the Opening Ceremony and Maj Gen IP Ranasinghe RWP RSP the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Administration) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of Closing Ceremony and gave away the Trophies and Certificates to the winners. Overall results of the tournament are as follows:

Inter squadron basketball tournament 2020

The Inter Squadron Basketball tournament was held on 28th and 29th September 2020 and the formidable Parakum squadron emerged the champions of both the male and female category.

Leaders Trophy Netball Tournament 2019
General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University organized Leaders Trophy 2019 Netball Tournament on 18th & 19th October 2019. Teams from National School of Business Management, Horizon University, The Open University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Technological Campus, CINEC Campus, one team from Southern Campus of Kotelawala Defence University and two teams from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University participated in the tournament which was held in KDU Soccer ground. The two team were announced as the joint champions since final match had to be abandoned due to bad weather. KDU team remained as the unbeaten team in the tournament. The Vice Chancellor of Kotelawala Defence University Air Vice Marshal HMSKB Kotakadeniya WWV, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, MSc (Def & Strat Stu), fndu, psc distributed awards and certificates to players.

BOXING

Inter-Squadron Boxing Meet-2020

KDU being one of the emerging Boxing clubs in Sri Lanka organized the Inter Squadron Boxing meet 2020 with the aim of identifying potential amateur boxers from the undergraduates. Out of 136 amateur boxers, 36 boxers were qualified to compete in the final 18 bouts which were held on 24th Feb 2020. Vice Chancellor of KDU Maj Gen M P Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc graced the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest.

HOCKEY

Colombo Hockey Knockout Tournament – Bacon Cup

KDU hockey team beat Royal College Hockey Club to emerge champions in Colombo hockey knockout tournament for the Bacon cup in a thrilling final played at Astro turf Colombo on 13th May 2018.

Tournament was held from 28th April 2018 to 13th May 2018 at Astro Turf – Colombo 7. KDU has represented the Men’s B Division and was able to secure the unbeaten victory.

KARATE

District and Western Province Karate Tournament 2019
Karate team of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University participated in the District and Western Province Karate Tournament 2019 organized by the Sri Lanka Karate – Do Federation on 18th and 19th January 2020 at Bandaragama Indoor Stadium. KDU team won 34 medals including 09 Gold medals, 10 Silver medals, 15 Bronze medals in both Kata and Kumite events.

VOLLEY BALL

KDU Volleyball Team Emerged as The Leaders Trophy Volleyball Champions In – 2019
The Leaders Trophy Volleyball Tournament organized by General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was held on 26th and 28th October 2019 at the Indoor Volleyball Court with the participation of eight teams. During the finals KDU team beat CINEC team as 3–0 in 3 hard fought games and became the Leaders Trophy Volleyball Champions for the year 2019. RUGBY

Leo Super Sevens 2020 Inter University Rugby Tournament
The annual Leo Super Sevens Inter University Rugby Tournament which was organized by the Leo Club of University of Colombo was held on 08 February 2020 at Havelock Grounds. There were nine teams from various higher education institutes. The KDU Rugby team managed to secure the 2nd Runner Up for the second consecutive year by beating the Royal Institute 19 – 07.

SOCCER
KDU soccer team played several friendly matches with Blue belt sports club, VIR Team, Bentota United sports club, SLIIT, ICBT, Veterans, Sports Club and SLAOC Team in Year 2012.

SQUASH

Leaders’ Trophy Squash Championship – 2019
Leaders’ Trophy Squash Championship – 2019 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was held on 19th and 20th October 2019 at the University Squash Court. Naval and Maritime Academy team won the men’s Championship and Police team won the women’s championship. KDU Men’s and Women’s team become runners up in both men and women categories. Brig JMC Jayaweera RSP psc, the Dean of Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies graced the occasion as the Chief Guests of the Opening and Closing Ceremony and gave away the Trophies and Certificates to the winners.

Kotelawala Defence University and University Of Peradeniya Became 2019 Leaders’ Trophy Table Tennis Champions
The Leader’s Trophy Table Tennis Tournament 2019 organized by the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University under the guidance and supervision of the Vice Chancellor, Air Vice Marshal Sagara Kotakadeniya was held for the fourth time on 11th October 2019 at the KDU Indoor Stadium with the participation of Table Tennis Teams of University of Peradeniya, Two teams from University of Moratuwa, National School of Business Management and Three teams from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. Lieutenant Colonel RA Samaranayake, Research Coordinator, Faculty of Strategic Studies graced the Closing Ceremony. General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University ‘A’ Team defeated the University of Moratuwa ‘A’ Team and became the Champions in Men’s Team event while University of Peradeniya beat the National School of Business Management to became the Champions in Women’s Team event

ROWING

Kotelawala Defence University Became Runners Up in Army Inter Regiment Indoor Rowing Championship 2018
Sir John Kotelawala Defence University Team emerged as the runners up in the 11th Army Inter Regiment Indoor Rowing Championship which was held at the Army indoor stadium, Panagoda on 25th and 26th October 2018.

Sri Lanka Army Signals Corps won the Championship and Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment became the Third.

Lady Officer Cadet J Myanga won the award for the best women player of the tournament.

Major General WBDP Fernando the Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army graced the closing ceremony as the chief guest and Major General IP Ranasinghe the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence) Kotelawala Defence University also attended to the occasion.

11th Army Inter Regiment Indoor Rowing Championship was organized by the Army Rowing Club.

Colours Night 2018 – 2019 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University ceremonially conducted its Colours Night 2018/2019 on 28th February 2020. The event was held at the Faculty of Graduate Studies Main Auditorium with the gracious participation of the Vice Chancellor, Major General Milinda Peiris as the chief guest.

The event was organized to appreciate the sports talents and skills displayed by military and civilian undergraduates of KDU during the years 2018 and 2019 with the objective of encouraging them to enhance their sporting talents and to elevate themselves to national and international levels.

The event was a culmination of the collective effort of all involved in uplifting sports at KDU, and the special role played by the coaches of respective sports events was recognized by awarding them with certificates in appreciation of the valuable service rendered by them.

Brigadier Adeepa Thilakarathna, the Rector, Southern Campus, Brigadier Nanda Hathurusinghe Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence& Administration) and Chairman of the Sports Council of KDU, Senior Professor Jayantha Ariyarathne – Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Deans of Faculties, members of the academic and military staff also participated in this important event of KDU.
